Putting your business plan online

Question:
We're a start-up and are all former high school teachers. So far, that has seemed to say to people that we're suckers as far as business is concerned. We signed a contract with a company to write our business plan and take it to market -- both hard copies and online. They wrote the plan. We are basically pleased. We paid them. Now they are saying that they can send out the hard copies, but if we want to post it online we need an e-business plan which is different and they want to charge us more to write that. As far as I'm concerned it's the same company so the most they would have to do would be to shorten it, not rewrite it. Is this standard, as far as you know?

Answer:
I don't agree with the notion that the fact that a plan is published on the Web changes it from a business plan to an e-plan. The posting on the Web is the form of publishing, and of course it changes the mechanics, file structure, perhaps even the length of segments; but the content is the same. It is still a business plan.

For proof of that, how about the business plans you've already seen, on our sites, posted as sample plans? They are the same plans, on the Web and on paper.

Here's where it gets more interesting: The latest version of Business Plan Pro includes automatic online publishing to a secure, password-protected website at www.secureplan.com. You can go to that site to see samples, all of them published automatically from a command built into the application itself. This facility is free with the purchase of Business Plan Pro.

Business Plan Pro can also export a completed business plan to HTML format, so that you can take the exported HTML and JPG files and post them to the Web using your own website and FTP. And it can also export to an Adobe Acrobat transportable format, which you could use to email a plan or to post on your own secure (or not) site.
